"Already with thee! Tender is the night..." F. S. Fitzgerald (St. Paul 1896- Hllywood 1940) scelse questi versi tratti dall' "ode all'usignolo" di John Keats per il titolo del suo famoso romanzo "tenera è la notte". Fitzgerald, famoso scrittore della magica Età del Jazz scisse cinque romanzi e numerosi racconti. La sua stessa vita fu un romanzo: nel 1920 sposò Zelda Syre e girò il mondo con lei. Vissero in Europa e soggiornarono a lungo nella riviera francese partecipando a fesre ed a eventi mondani. in Francia, Fitzgerald incontrò gli americani espatriati Gertrude Stein, John Dos Passos e Ernest Hemingway. Il mondo europeo e la situazione americana degli anni venti sono espresse nei suoi romanzi, dove descrive dettagliatamente il modo di vivere, le abitudini, la moralità sociale di questo periodo. "Al di qua dal paradiso", "Il grande Gatsby", "Belli e dannati", "Tenera è la notte", "Gli ultimi fuochi" lo includono a pieno titolo nel gruppo dei grandi scrittori americani degli anni venti, insieme a Faulkner e a Hemingway. Gran parte della critica considera "Tenera è la notte" e non "Il grande Gatsby" come suo capolavoro. Quando fu pubblicato nel 1934, fu considerato come un residuo di un periodo tramontato : I Ruggenti Anni Venti, periodo di grandi cambiamenti di costume tra le due guerre. Ma "Tenera è la notte" è un libro tragico. "Se ti è piaciuto Il grande Gatsby, per grazia di Dio leggi questo. Gatsby fu un tour de force, ma questo è una confessione di fede", con questa dedica, Fitzgerald firmò una copia del suo libro ad un amico, e questa frase riassume il valore essenziale del romanzo.
La meravigliosa e dorata Costa Azzurra con le feste e le storie d'amore è la cornice della storia di Dick Diver, un giovane e promettente psichiatra, e di sua moglie-paziente nicole (questi personaggi ricordano Fitzgerald e sua moglie Zelda): Ma, dietro queste figure frivole e mondane è nascosta la fine di una generazione: Fitzgerald denuncia infatti il potere distruttivo del danaro che annienta l'uomo. Dick sarà distrutto dalla rcerca sfrenata di potere e di ricchezza: sarà comprato dalla famiglia di sua moglie che cerca un marito-psichiatra per Nicole. Ma il sogno dura poco: Dick diventerà dottore in un'isolta cittadina dell'America intrappolato dalla sua sete di potere.

Fitzgerald, the famous writer of the magic Jazz-Age, wrote five novels and several short stories. His life was like a novel: in 1920 he married Zelda Sayre and he travelled round the world with her. They lived in Europe and stayed for a long time on the French Riviera taking part in parties and mundane events. In France, Fitzgerald met the American Expatriate Gertrude Stein, John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway. The European world and the American situation in the twenties, are expressed in his novels, where he descibes in detail the way of life, the customs, the social morality of this period.
"this side of Paradise", "The great Gatsby", "The beautiful and damned", "Tender is the night", "the love of the last tycoon, make him a worthy member of the group of the great twenties writers together with Faulkner and Hemigway. Most critics consider "Tender is the night" and not "The great Gatsby" as his masterpiece.
When it was published in 1934, it was received as a residue of a finished period: The Roaring Twenties, a period of great change and variation in customs between the two wars.
But "tender is the night" is a tragic novel. "If you liked The Great Gatsby, for God's sake read this. Gatsby was a tour the force, but this is a confession of faith", with this inscription, Fitzgerald signed a copy of his book to a friend and this phrase sums up the seential value of the book. The beautiful and gilded Cote D'Azur with parties and love stories is the frame of the story of Dick Diver, a young and promising psychiatrist, and his wife- patient Nicole (these characters recall Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda). But behind these frivolous and wordly figure, is hidden the end of a generation.
Fitzgerald denonces the destructive power of money that destroys man. Dick, in fact, will be destroyed by the umbridled research of power and wealth: he will be bought by his wife's family who are looking for a psychiatrist-husband for Nicole.
But the dream is short: Dick will become a doctor in a small isolated American town, entropped by his longing for power.
